City of Toronto, Missanabie Cree First Nation to mark progress of rental housing project at 140 Merton St.
On Monday, City of Toronto staff will join Missanabie Cree First Nation for a Blessing Ceremony to celebrate progress on the rental housing project at 140 Merton St. The ceremony, guided by Chief Jason Gauthier, will honour the traditions of Missanabie Cree First Nation and serve as an important moment to reflect on how the project has come and embrace the path ahead.
Date: Monday, May 26
Time: 10 a.m.
Location: 140 Merton St.
Note: Street parking is available.
One of the initial sites in the City of Toronto’s Housing Now program, 140 Merton St. is being developed by Missanabie Cree First Nation, making it the first City-owned property to be leased and operated exclusively by an Indigenous organization and not-for-profit entity.
The building will include 294 rental homes for Indigenous Elders and non-Indigenous seniors (and open to others). Approximately 33 per cent of the residential units will be affordable. The building will also feature 2,150 square metres of community space to be subleased back to the City to accommodate tenants including the Senior Peoples’ Resources in North Toronto.
