The Week Ahead: Key Events and Meetings
19-25 May 2025
Council of Europe Human Rights Day: “Participation, influence, responsibility” – Civil society as part of democracy.
19 May, Tampere (Finland) and online – The third edition of the visibility event will tackle the Council of Europe’s role in promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law, especially from the perspective of the state of civil society. It will also mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the European Convention on Human Rights and the 35th anniversary of Finland’s ratification of the Convention.
Other speakers include Prof. dr. Antoine Buyse from Utrecht University, Vice Rector, Tampere University, Antti Lönnqvist, Policy Director of Amnesty International Finland, Niina Laajapuro, Executive Director of Demo Finland Anu Juvonen and youth delegates.
Children’s Forum and Young Citizens’ Forum
The Children’s Forum will welcome 650 children from the region, aged 8 to 10, who will discover initiatives linked to the themes of diversity and democracy.
The Young Citizens’ Forum will welcome 200 young people who will present their initiatives and debate the “right of children to appropriate justice when they are suspected of having committed offences”, with the participation of France’s Children’s Ombudsman, Éric Delemar. They will address the themes of information on justice, rules at school, relations with the police, violence between minors and the Attal law.
The Children’s Forum will be held again on 17 June and will focus on the theme of diversity.
Conference on artificial intelligence in the health sector
21 May, Helsinki (Finland) – The Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the Council of Europe will organise a conference entitled “AI healthcare and human rights: supporting patients, enabling doctors, safeguarding the therapeutic relationship”. The aim of the event is to explore the human rights implications for patient autonomy, professional standards, equitable access to healthcare, privacy and the right to information.

19-23 May, Strasbourg – The 13th edition of the Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition will be held at the European Court of Human Rights. The Grand Final will be held in the Grand Chamber hearing room of the European Court of Human Rights at 1.30 pm on Friday 23 May.
The Forum will address emerging challenges and opportunities for advancing SOGIESC equality across Europe, focusing on strategies to counter the rise of anti-LGBTI narratives and protect existing gains. Discussions will also highlight the implementation of national and regional action plans aimed at combatting discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics.
20 May, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing five judgments concerning Azerbaijan, Georgia, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands.
22 May, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing 16 judgements and/or decisions concerning Armenia, Azerbaijan, France, Greece, Italy, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
24-25 May, Tbilisi (Georgia) – Tbilisi Open Air Festival, the largest music festival in the Caucasus region, will provide a unique platform to raise awareness about the values and rights promoted by the Council of Europe and an opportunity to engage directly with key target groups, including children, youth, women and girls, men and boys, members of minority communities, such as national and religious minorities, LGBTI individuals, and the general public.
