Launch of the WHO guideline on the use of lower-sodium salt substitutes
14.00-15.15 CET, online
The new WHO guideline on lower-sodium salt substitutes (LSSS) aims to support Member States in reducing sodium intake and improving heart health through public health policies and interventions.
With 1.9 million annual deaths linked to high sodium intake, WHO recommends limiting sodium to below 2 g/day to reduce blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk. Despite efforts, global sodium intake remains high at 4.3 g/day, necessitating urgent action.
LSSS, which contain less sodium and often include potassium chloride, are seen as a potential strategy to lower sodium intake and associated risks, however, concerns about potassium safety, especially for those with kidney issues, have been raised.
The guideline will be launched in a virtual event on at 14.00 CET on Monday, 27 January, please register [https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/01/27/default-calendar/launch-of-the-who-guideline-on-the-use-of-lower-sodium-salt-substitutes] to attend. Health community calls for urgent action for clean air ahead of WHO conference
Ahead of the Second WHO Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health [https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/03/25/default-calendar/second-global-conference-on-air-pollution-and-health] in March 2025, the global health community is making an urgent call to action for clean air, urging governments, business leaders and policy-makers to act swiftly to stop air pollution and save lives.
Air pollution is responsible for at least 7 million deaths each year, contributing to a growing global health crisis, with the vast majority of deaths caused by noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular issues, respiratory diseases and lung cancer.
The call to action will be available here [https://www.who.int/news/item/27-01-2025-health-community-calls-for-urgent-action-for-clean-air-ahead-of-who-conference] at 09.00 CET on Monday, 27 January.

World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) continue to disproportionately affect the poorest members of the global community, primarily in areas where water safety, sanitation and access to health care are inadequate.
On World Neglected Tropical Diseases Day [https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-ntd-day/2025], WHO and partners call for a renewed and united effort under the theme “Unite. Act. Eliminate.” and urge bold, sustainable investments to free the estimated 1.5 billion people, in the world’s most vulnerable communities, from a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.

Climate change, malaria and neglected tropical diseases (webinar)
