Plenary session, Strasbourg
Polish EU Council Presidency/Donald Tusk*. On /Wednesday/, MEPs will discuss the programme of Poland’s six-month Council Presidency, which started on 1 January, with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Commission President von der Leyen.
Enforcing EU digital rules to protect democracy*. On /Tuesday/, MEPs will discuss the need to enforce the Digital Services Act (DSA) and tackle the spread of illegal content, online disinformation, and other societal risks to safeguard European democracy from foreign interference and algorithmic manipulation.
Trump presidency/EU-US relations*. On /Tuesday/, MEPs will discuss the geopolitical and economic implications for EU-US relations of the new Trump administration.
December European Council*. On /Wednesday/, MEPs will assess the results of the 19 December EU summit, which took stock of the latest events in Ukraine and the Middle East, with European Council President António Costa and Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Ceasefire agreement in Gaza*. MEPs will discuss on /Monday/ the ceasefire in Gaza, the need to release hostages and end the humanitarian crisis, and ways to work towards a two-state solution.
Russian disinformation on Ukraine*. On /Thursday/, MEPs will vote on a resolution about Russia’s manipulation of history and its use of false narratives to justify its war of aggression against Ukraine, concluding a plenary debate held in December 2024.
Repression in Belarus/Unrest in Georgia*. On /Tuesday/, MEPs will debate the continuing oppression and fake elections in Belarus, and the political turmoil in Georgia around the investiture of a pro-Russian President, with representatives of the Polish Presidency and the Commission. MEPs will vote on accompanying resolutions on /Wednesday (/Belarus) and the next plenary (Georgia).
Hungary/Espionage*. On /Tuesday/, plenary will assess recent media reports alleging that Hungary’s intelligence services spied on EU officials investigating fraud in the country.
Venezuela*. On /Tuesday/, MEPs will debate the critical situation in Venezuela after the investiture of illegitimate President Maduro, followed by a vote on a resolution on /Thursday/.
Climate crisis*. On /Monday/, MEPs will debate the need for climate action to fight global warming in light of the record high temperatures in 2024.
President’s diary*. On Tuesday European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will meet Egypt’s Foreign Affairs Minister Badr Abdelatty and Mayotte’s Departmental Council President Ben Issa Ousseni, as well as speak at a Conference of the Presidents of the Outermost Regions in the EU. On Wednesday, she will meet Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk. President Metsola will then travel to Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday evening, where she will deliver the opening remarks at the World Economic Forum High-level Europe dialogue. On Thursday, still in Davos, she will participate in a World Economic Forum panel discussion.
Last-minute briefing*. On /Monday /at 16.30, Parliament will hold a press briefing on the plenary session, which starts at 17.00. Political group briefings will take place on /Tuesday /morning.
