Japan-Philippines Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
On November 26, commencing at 3:20 p.m. for approximately 20 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting Fiuggi, Italy, to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, held a bilateral meeting with Hon. Enrique A. Manalo, Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Philippines. The overview of the meeting is as follows:
1 At the outset, Minister IWAYA stated that Japan welcomes the Philippines’ first and groundbreaking participation in the G7, a forum for cooperation among like-minded countries. In response, the Secretary Manalo expressed his desire for close cooperation. The two Ministers also confirmed that the two countries, which shared fundamental values and principles, would work together to address regional and international challenges including the South China Sea issue and for the peaceful settlement of disputes.
2 Minister Iwaya welcomed the progress being made in cooperation that contributes to improving connectivity and economic resilience, such as promoting Open RAN, and Secretary Manalo expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support.
3 The two Ministers also exchanged views on the situation in the South China Sea and the cooperation in security area. The two Ministers affirmed that concrete progress has been made in security cooperation between the two countries and welcomed the first Japan-U.S.-Philippines Maritime Consultations to be held in Japan next month.
