Japan-Canada Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
On 26th November, commencing at 8:35 a.m. local time (4:35 pm JST) for approximately 30 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a meeting with The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, during his visit to Fiuggi, Italy to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The overview of the meeting is as follows.
1 At the outset, Minister Iwaya stated that the Ishiba administration attaches great importance to cooperation with like-minded countries in its foreign and security policies, and stated that he would like to promote cooperation with Canada as well as within G7.
2 The Ministers shared the view on the importance of cooperation among like-minded countries on regional situations, including deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, situations in the Middle East, Ukraine and East Asia. Minister Iwaya welcomed Canada’s increased engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, stating that the security in Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific is inseparable, and that Japan would support Canada during her G7 presidency next year.
3 Minister Iwaya also expressed his desire to continue working together with Canada to maintain and strengthen a free and fair economic order in the Indo-Pacific, including through CPTPP of which Canada is the chair this year.
4 The Ministers welcomed the progress in energy cooperation through LNG Canada, and Minister Iwaya expressed his hope to further promote Japan-Canada economic cooperation as well as people-to-people exchanges.
5 The Ministers concurred to continue cooperation under the Canadian G7 Presidency next year.
