Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights Issues Julie Turner and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack will travel to the Republic of Korea (ROK) October 7-11, 2024.
In Seoul, Ambassador Turner and Ambassador Van Schaack will co-host a high-level strategic workshop focused on accountability for human rights violations in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). The workshop, organized by the Center for Justice and Accountability and funded by the State Department’s Office of Global Criminal Justice, aims to strengthen global efforts to address these abuses.
In addition to the workshop, Ambassadors Turner and Van Schaack will meet with ROK government officials, civil society leaders, and North Korean escapees. These engagements will emphasize the U.S. commitment to holding the DPRK accountable for its human rights violations and abuses, supporting the North Korean defector and escapee community, and advancing a survivor-centered approach to justice.
Ambassadors Turner and Van Schaack will also highlight the importance of multilateral cooperation to raise awareness of and address the ongoing human rights abuses in the DPRK.
The United States remains steadfast in working with our allies, including the Republic of Korea, to amplify the voices of North Korean escapees and ensure their stories are heard.
