(AGENPARL) – ven 09 agosto 2024 ‘Yes to Granny!’: A performance on Aug. 10 raising awareness on housing challenges for seniors In an effort to bring awareness to housing challenges, particularly for aging and senior residents, the City is inviting the community to attend a free artist performance called “Yes to Granny!”‘Yes to Granny’ is an art performance in the form of a mock protest to raise awareness about the disproportionate impact of the housing crisis on aging and senior residents as well as the potential of in-fill development as a solution. Inspired by the idea of building Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) for aging seniors in need of care, Angie Eng conceived this art campaign as part of her creative engagement work with the City’s Community Development Department. She says, ‘It was only two generations ago that intergenerational homes were the norm for many of us of all classes and ethnicities. ADUs and in-fill development help to bring back long-forgotten housing options that can fill the need for our intergenerational families with seniors in need.’
Last year, the City was awarded a grant by the California Arts Council’s Creative Corp program to place five local artists in various City departments to design creative engagement strategies. Angie Eng, one of the selected local artists, has been working with the City’s Planning Division to creatively engage with residents in the areas of community development, housing and urban planning.Borrowing the idea from signage used in political campaigns, she designed her own sign with a granny icon to advocate for intergenerational living. In addition to signage, a group of volunteer performers will walk the streets during the ‘2nd Saturday in Midtown’ event on August 10 from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. starting on K street and 20th Street. They will be chanting slogans like ‘When we say Granny, you say Yes! Granny- Yes! Granny- Yes!. ‘ What do we want? ADUs. When do we want them- Now!’ The City of Sacramento now has an ADU Resource Center website to guide people step-by-step on how to build an ADU in the city. The website also includes 3 free shelf-ready ADU plans that can expedite the process and help save on costs.
