(AGENPARL) – mer 24 aprile 2024 Monthly demand at 25.7 billion kWh (-1.4% compared to March 2023, +1.1% adjusted for
seasonal effects)
TERNA: ELECTRICITY DEMAND IN MARCH COVERED 41.8%
BY RENEWABLE ENERGY
Significant reduction in fossil sources (-24% compared to March 2023, and -87.1% in coalbased production)
Record imports in the first quarter of 2024: 22% of demand covered by imports,
corresponding to 17 TWh, due to average price spreads against the main European
exchanges
Industrial consumption down 5.2% on March last year, dropping to -2.3% with the figure
adjusted for seasonal and other effects. Electricity consumption up in the services sector
in January 2024 (+5.2%)
Rome, 24 April 2024 – Italian electricity consumption fell by 1.4% in March compared to
2023 figures. According to data gathered by Terna, the company that manages the Italian
national transmission grid, electricity demand in the previous month was 25.7 billion kWh.
The figure for electricity demand adjusted for seasonal, temperature and calendar effects,
switches to positive territory (+1.1%). This inversion is attributable to the “Easter effect”
and two less working days (21 instead of 23); the average monthly temperature was also
0.6°C higher than March 2023.
At the regional level, in March there was a decrease in the North and in Central Italy (2.2% and -1.1%, respectively), while demand was substantially unchanged in the South
and on the Islands (+0.3%).
In the first three months of the year, national demand decreased by 0.7% compared to the
corresponding period of 2023 (adjusted value unchanged).
The IMCEI index prepared by Terna, which looks at the industrial consumption of energyintensive businesses, posted a decrease of 5.2% compared to March 2023. This drops to 2.3% adjusted for seasonal, temperature and calendar effects. Looking at the breakdown,
cement, lime and gypsum was the only segment with a positive figure.
The short-term figure for electricity demand, adjusted for seasonal, calendar and
temperature effects, was up slightly compared to February 2024 (+0.7%). The IMCEI index
remained basically stable (-0.3%).
The IMSER index, which Terna publishes on the basis of monthly electricity consumption
figures from certain distribution-grid operators (E-Distribuzione, UNARETI, A-Reti, Edyna e
Deval), recorded an increase of 5.2% in January 2024, compared to January 2023.
Returning to Terna’s monthly figures, last month saw 79.6% of Italian electricity demand
met by national production, and the remainder (20.4%) by the balance of electricity
exchanged with foreign countries. The monthly foreign balance was 5.2 TWh, 23% higher
than March 2023. In particular, the import-export balance is the result of the combined
effect of an increase in imports (+22%) and exports that remained stable (-0.5%). In the
first quarter of 2024, there were record imports: 22% of national demand was covered by
imports, (17 TWh), due to average price spreads against the main European exchanges.
Looking at the breakdown, net national production was 20.7 billion kWh. Renewables
covered 41.8% of electricity demand (33% in March 2023). There was an increase in
hydroelectric (+140.4%), photovoltaic (+1.4%, the growth in installed power was partially
offset by reduced solar irradiation in the period analysed compared to last year) and
geothermal power (+4.1%). Wind production dropped (-5.7%), also thermal production as
a direct consequence of growth in renewables and imports: -24% compared to March
2023. Specifically, we can note a huge drop in coal-based production: -87.1% compared to
the same period last year.
In the first nine months of 2024 growth seen in renewables in 2023 continued, reaching
1,844 MW (of which 1,721 MW photovoltaic). This is 633 MW higher (+52%) than the
same period of the previous year.
