World Pulses Day 2024: Global event to highlight pulses’ role in promoting soil health and contribution towards achieving sustainable agrifood systems
FAO headquarters, Rome, Thursday 8 February, 12:30 CET
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will mark this year’s World Pulses Day with a hybrid event on the theme: “Pulses: nourishing soils and people”. The celebration will explore the symbiotic relationship between pulses and soil health and how that benefits people.
Pulses are the edible seeds of leguminous plants cultivated for both food and feed. Beans (Phaseolus and Vigna), chickpeas and peas are the most well-known and commonly consumed types of pulses, but there are several varieties more from around the world, all with great benefits on food security, nutrition, health, climate change, and biodiversity.
The FAO event will showcase how pulses can be a sustainable choice for diversifying agriculture, promoting healthy soils and fostering resilient farming systems in a changing climate and environment.
FAO Director-General QU Dongyu will deliver opening remarks at the event which begins at 12:30 CET on Thursday 8 February 2024 and will be webcast here.
Speakers include SHINDO Mitsuaki, Minister Counsellor and Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to FAO; Leonard Mizzi, Deputy Director – European Commission Directorate F, DG International Partnerships; Jens Busma, Head of Agriculture and Rural Development Division, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Germany); Vijay Iyengar, President, Global Pulse Confederation.
