(AGENPARL) – mer 20 dicembre 2023 Monthly demand at 25.3 billion kWh
TERNA: ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION UP BY +1.4% IN NOVEMBER
Strong growth in production from renewable sources (+43% compared to November 2022)
due to input from of all sources: hydroelectric (+86.6%), wind (+51.9%) and photovoltaic
(+28.1%)%)
Production from thermal sources continues to fall (coal down -65% compared to
November 2022)
Rome, 20 December 2023 – The upward shift in electricity consumption compared to 2022
continued in November. According to data from Italian power grid operator Terna,
electricity demand in Italy last month stood at 25.3 billion kWh – an increase of 1.4%
compared to November 2022. While true that this positive change only partially
compensated for the negative figure (-6.2%) of November 2021, it was nevertheless
achieved in the same number of working days (21) and with an average monthly
temperature largely the same as November 2022 (-0.1°C). The adjusted figure was in line
at +1.3%.
Terna’s IMCEI index, which reviews the industrial consumption of around 1000 energy-intensive
companies, shows a 1% decrease from the same period last year. This was the result of differing
trends for companies with high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) connections to the national
grid: HV companies saw an increase (+0.7%), while MVs suffered a decrease (-9.1%). Increases
were recorded in the transport, paper, cement, lime and gypsum, and iron and steel sectors.
Ceramics and glass, non-ferrous metals, foodstuffs, mechanics, and chemistry instead declined.
The short-term figure for electricity demand, adjusted for seasonal, calendar and temperature
effects, was down (-0.8%) compared to October 2023. However, the IMCEI index showed an
increase (+0.9%). Alternating short-term positive and negative changes keep the index unchanged.
In the first eleven months of 2023, cumulative electricity demand in Italy was down by 2.8%
compared to the same period in 2022 (adjusted figure -2.1%). The IMCEI Index was also down,
recording -4.3% from January to November: the decreases in the first six months were particularly
intense but became less so from July onwards.
Geographically, the November 2023 trend was positive right across the country: +1.4% in the
North, +0.9% in Central Italy and +1.9% in the South and the islands.
During November, 82.1% of Italian electricity demand was met by domestic production and the
remainder (17.9%) came from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Net
national production amounted to 21 billion kWh, on a par with November 2022.
Production from renewable water sources continued its upward trend (+86.6%) from last year,
owing to increased resource availability. Production from wind power increased (+51.9%), again
mainly due to greater resource availability (compared to November 2022, installed capacity was up
by 558 MW, about 5%). The increase in production from photovoltaics (+28.1%) stemmed mainly
from the installed capacity increase of 4,797 MW, up about 20% from the same period last year.
Lastly, geothermal-source production also grew (+0.5%).
As for wind power, Terna findings confirm that on 25 November a record high of 8.8 Gwh was set
for wind power production. The figure remained constant throughout the 11.00 am to 3.00 pm time
band. The previous record of 8.3 GWh dated back to March 2023.
Production from thermal sources was down (-21.8%), with coal in particular dropping by 65%.
Last month, renewables produced a total of 10.4 billion kWh, covering 40.9% of electricity demand
(compared to 29% in November 2022). Production from renewables in November was made up as
follows: 40.4% hydro, 14.9% photovoltaic, 28.7% wind, 11.7% biomass, and 4.3% geothermal.
According to Terna figures from the monthly report, in the first eleven months of 2023 the capacity
increase arising from all renewable sources in Italy was 4,938 MW, which was approximately 2,269
MW (+85%) higher than in the same period of 2022.
Looking at the import-export balance, the trend this month was also positive (+7.9%) due to the
combined effect of a decline in exports (-21.5%) and a rise in imports (+5.7%).
