Press release 15-12-2023 None [2] NEW TIME: Media Freedom Act: press conference on Friday at 14.00
Lead MEPs will brief media on the outcome of the third round of negotiations with the Council on the European Media Freedom Act.
Sabine Verheyen (EPP, DE) [3], lead rapporteur for the Culture and Education Committee, and Ramona Strugariu (Renew, RO) [4], opinion rapporteur from the Civil Liberties Committee, will participate in the press conference.
When*: Friday 15 December, 14.00 – 14.30 CET (tbc)
Where*: Anna Politkovskaya press conference room, European Parliament in Brussels
How*: Accredited media representatives can attend the press conference in person. Journalists wishing to ask questions remotely need to connect via Interactio [5] .
The press conference will also be web streamed live and recorded on Parliament’s Multimedia Centre [6] .
Background*
The European Parliament adopted its demands on the draft bill to strengthen press freedom and journalists in EU [7] in October 2023, in response to growing threats to media freedom and to the industry’s viability.
The Commission in its impact assessment [8] warned about deterioration in the EU media landscape: instances of public and private interference that weaken media independence, state resources that may be used to put pressure on media, and distorting competition in the internal market. Moreover, interference in editorial and management decisions of the media may lead to biased media coverage.
