(AGENPARL) – mer 22 novembre 2023 “BEST ESG RATING AWARD 2023” GOES TO TERNA
The award, based on Standard Ethics ratings, went to the Italian national power grid operator for
its excellent performance and commitment to biodiversity
This confirms the Group’s focus on sustainability, which is a strategic driver and pillar of its
activities for energy transition
Rome, 22 November 2023 – Italian power grid operator Terna, led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, has
received the “Best ESG Rating Award 2023”.
Sustainability is a strategic driver and a cornerstone of the Group’s operations. It received the
prestigious award for its excellent performance in the ESG categories assessed, specifically in the
area of environment for biodiversity conservation actions.
The “Best ESG Rating Award 2023”, based on Standard Ethics analysis, a leading agency
specializing in non-financial ratings, recognises Terna’s “commitment to the protection of
biodiversity, which the Company pursues through qualified partnerships and governance tools aimed
at achieving international goals and EU strategies.”
Using objective analyses and scientific tools, Standard Ethics analysts provided a detailed panorama
of Terna’s position in relation to sustainability and corporate-governance guidelines issued by the
UN, OECD and EU, assigning the Group an EE rating.
For Terna, reconciling the need to create strategic electricity infrastructure for Italy and the necessity
to protect the environment and biodiversity is a primary goal.
One outstanding example of this commitment is the new submarine connection between the Island
of Elba and the mainland. Before laying the cable, the Italian power grid operator transplanted
approximately 53,000 Posidonia Oceanica cuttings across a site covering more than 1,650 m2, in
order to guarantee marine biodiversity in the Gulf of Follonica, between Livorno and Grosseto.
The Group’s projects also include Biodotti, re-naturing action at the base of pylons along five
overhead power lines. The main goals of this initiative are to strengthen natural habitats at the base
of pylons through the planting of native species and the use of installations supporting wild fauna,
also helping the structures to blend into the landscape through environmental engineering.
Another example of Terna’s focus on biodiversity is provided by the Tiny Forest project, small but
highly efficient plant communities, created for the first time in Italy following the method of the
Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. These miniature woods contribute to increasing the speed of
forest growth, the development of biodiversity and CO2 absorption capacity.
Terna’s leadership in sustainability is also evidenced by the presence of the company in the major
ESG indices, including the STOXX Global ESG Leaders, Dow Jones Sustainability, Bloomberg
Gender Equality, Euronext Vigeo, FTSE4Good, S&P Global 1200 ESG, MIB ESG and ECP.
