(AGENPARL) – lun 20 novembre 2023 Monthly demand at 25.8 billion kWh
TERNA, ELECTRICITY DEMAND ON THE RISE IN OCTOBER: +4.2%
Industrial consumption still declining: -3,3% compared to the same month last year
Renewable energy sources production +34,6% thanks to the contribution of hydroelectric
(+87,2%) and wind power (+72,7%) compared to October 2022
Rome, 20 November 2023 – Recovery in the value of electricity consumption in October. According
to data from Terna, the national power grid operator, last month’s electricity demand in Italy was 25.8
billion kWh, with a growth of 4.2% compared to October 2022. This positive variation, only partially
recovering the negative figure of October 2022 (-6,2%), was achieved with one more working day
(22 instead of 21) and a monthly average temperature 1°C higher than October 2022. Adjusting the
data for these effects, the variation compared to the same month last year is +3.2%.
In detail, October’s average temperature exceeded the long-term average by 2.7°C, breaking the
record set in the same month of last year.
Compared to the same period last year, the IMCEI Index elaborated by Terna, which examines the
industrial consumption of about 1,000 “energy-intensive” companies, records a decline of 3.3%.
Positive variations in the transport, cement, lime and gypsum, and food sectors; declines in nonferrous metals, steel, paper, ceramics and glass, and chemicals. Mechanical sector remains
stationary.
In cyclical terms, the value of electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected for calendar and
temperature effects, shows a slight increase (+0.5%) compared to September 2023. Conversely, the
cyclical variation of the IMCEI index decreases (-1%). According to data from recent months, the
index decline appears to stabilize at levels lower than the years before the pandemic.
In the first ten months of 2023, cumulative electricity demand in Italy is down 3.2% compared to the
same period in 2022 (-2.4% adjusted figure). The IMCEI index also shows a negative sign,
registering -4.6% from January to October.
Geographically, the year-on-year variation in October 2023 was positive everywhere: +3.4% in the
North, +4.8% in the Center, and +5.7% in the South and Islands.
In October 2023, 81,5% of Italian electricity demand was satisfied by domestic production and the
remaining quota (18,5%) by the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Net national
production amounted to 21.2 billion kWh, a decrease of 1% compared to October 2022.
Recovery of renewable hydroelectric production continues compared to last year (+87,2%); also
increasing wind (72.7%), solar (+9,2%) and geothermal (+1.1%) sources. Thermal production
decreases (-17.3% compared to the same period in last year), with a 74% drop in coal, particularly
due to the conclusion of the maximization program.
Last month, renewable sources produced a total of 9.2 billion kWh, covering 35.6% of electricity
demand (compared to 27.5% in October 2022). Renewable production in October was divided as
follows: 36.5% hydropower, 24.9% photovoltaic, 20.3% wind, 13.3% biomass, 5% geothermal.
According to Terna’s monthly report, considering all renewable sources, the capacity increase in Italy
in the first ten months of 2023 is 4,434 MW, a value about 2,080 MW higher (+88%) than the same
period in 2022. Extending the analysis to the last 12 months (from November 2022 to October 2023),
the installed capacity increase is 5,116 MW.
As for the import-export balance, the year-on-year variation this month is also positive (+35.1%) due
to a decrease in exports (-55.5%) and an increase in imports (+24.4%).
