DAVIS CUP, FINAL 8: ITALY’S CALL-UPS
The competition will be played at ‘Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena’
Rome, October 23th 2023 – Italian Davis Cup team captain’s, Filippo Volandri, has announced the list of
players called up for the Final 8 of the historic competition, which will take place from November 21st
to November 26th on the indoor fast courts of the ‘Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena’ in
Malaga.
Here the ‘Azzurri’ for Malaga:
MATTEO ARNALDI
SIMONE BOLELLI
LORENZO MUSETTI
JANNIK SINNER
LORENZO SONEGO
On Thursday, November 23th at 10 a.m., ‘Azzurri’ will play against Netherlands in Davis Cup Final 8
quarter-finals. In case of victory, Italy would challenge in the semifinals the winner of Serbia – champion
in 2010 – versus Great Britain, winner of Group B, which has won the prestigious competition 10 times
(last one in 2015).
ITALY VS NETHERLANDS – Italy arrived in Malaga after finishing the group stage at second place of Group
A: on the fast court of the ‘Unipol Arena’ in Bologna, Arnaldi, Bolelli, Musetti, Sonego and Vavassori took
two wins out of three ties played – defeat against Canada, victories against Chile and Sweden – finishing
behind the North Americans, holders of the title. On the other hand, the Netherlands, fielding
Griekspoor, Koolhof, Middelkoop and van de Zandschulp, finished at the top of Group D (played in Split),
ahead of Finland (with Croatia and the United States also in the group).
Italy has reached – for seven times – the final in the competition, winning its only title in Chile in 1976.
The Netherlands boasts as its best result the 2001 semi-final, lost against France. For the ‘Orange’ it will
be the second consecutive qualification to the Final 8: in Malaga, last year, they were eliminated in the
quarters by Australia.
There have been seven previous meetings between Italy and Netherlands, all won by the ‘Azzurri’ (last
success recorded in 2010).
Filippo Volandri, Italian Davis Cup team captain’s: “The players called up for the Final 8 are Arnaldi,
Bolelli, Musetti, Sinner and Sonego. This is the team that, at the moment, gives the most certainties.
Berrettini is working hard to recover at 100%: for him, as for all the others players, the general selection
criterion applies, is based on physical and technical guarantees that can be provided. We will monitor
progress in the coming weeks. In Malaga we will return with the objective of winning, it’s undeniable. We
have shown that we have heart, character and lots of quality. The road to the title will be long and
arduous, we are aware of that. At this level, mistakes are not allowed: we have to keep our composure
and concentration at all times, starting with the first match against Netherlands. They are a truly
fearsome national team that ended the group phase at the top of their group, beating an opponent of
the highest level such the United States. They have very good singles players and a very good doubles
team. We are working to be ready and we will be. I can count on a group of extraordinary guys, in every
respect, ready to give their all to represent these colours. There is nothing more rewarding than wearing
and fighting for the italian jersey”.
