World Food Day (16 October 10:00 CEST)
The theme of World Food Day 2023 is “Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind”. 2.4 billion people live in water-stressed countries and around 600 million people who depend, at least partially, on aquatic food systems for a living are suffering the effects of pollution, ecosystem degradation, unsustainable practices and climate change.
The Day will highlight the importance of managing water wisely,
producing food and other essential agricultural commodities with less water, while ensuring water is distributed equally, aquatic food systems are preserved, and nobody is left behind.
The global ceremony will take place at FAO Headquarters, 10:00 CEST on 16 October 2023. It will have the participation of QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General; Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic; Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland; Mariam Bint Mohammed, Minister for Climate Change and Environment, United Arab Emirates; Alvaro Lario, President of IFAD; and Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme. It will also have special messages from Pope Francis and UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The FAO Achievement Award will also be conferred during the event, accompanied by a special exhibition dedicated to World Food Day.
On October 19 at 14:00 CEST, Junior World Food Day will take place at FAO headquarters. Special guests, including international food heroes and chefs such as Fatmata Binta, Anahita Dhondy, Bela Gil, Max Mariola, Rodrigo Pacheco; athlete and UNDP Regional Goodwill Ambassador Michael Haddad; young activist Olivia Mandle; gardener and FAO Goodwill Ambassador Diarmuid Gavin;, and, sustainable fashion activist Matteo Ward, will join young people for an inspiring conversation to learn concrete water-saving actions. It will be a fun-filled event with stories, music, art and dance, accompanied by a live performance of the 2023 youth music video by the multicultural Piccola Orchestra di Tor Pignattara and friends.
World Food Forum
The World Food Forum (WFF) flagship event will take place at FAO headquarters in Rome on 16-20 October.
The WFF’s flagship event comprises the WFF Global Youth Forum, the FAO Science and Innovation Forum and the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum, supporting the need for an intergenerational dialogue among leaders and agrifood stakeholders.
The three fora consider ongoing challenges and crises, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the current and next generation to increase ingenuity in science, technology and innovation – and investments in key areas of food and agriculture.
The WFF Global Youth Forum – a youth-led movement and network to transform our agrifood systems – is this year committed to the theme: “Agrifood systems transformation accelerates climate action”. Key events include a Youth Food Lab, agrifood innovation sessions, a concert and an exhibit.
The FAO Science and Innovation Forum will focus on enhancing the accessibility of the most appropriate climate technologies, innovative practices and local knowledge in agrifood systems for climate change adaptation, resilience and mitigation.
At the FAO Hand-in-Hand Investment Forum Ministers and representatives from the participating countries will have the opportunity to present their country prioritized investment plans and detail opportunities in those areas where the Hand-in-Hand Initiative supports the Government to reduce poverty and hunger.
United Nations Global Indigenous Youth Forum (UNGIYF)
The United Nations Global Indigenous Youth Forum (UNGIYF) is also set to convene on 16-20 October at FAO Headquarters. The biennial event serves as a pivotal platform for Indigenous youth from around the world to engage in critical dialogues and advocate for meaningful change.
With over 200 Indigenous youth participants expected, UNGIYF 2023 will delve into pressing issues affecting Indigenous Peoples’ food and knowledge systems within the context of climate change and biodiversity conservation. This year’s forum builds upon the significant groundwork laid by its inaugural edition in 2021 and the Global Indigenous Youth Declaration on Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems.
The event is organized by the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus, the World Reindeer Herder’s Association, and the FAO Indigenous Peoples Unit.
