43RD GENERAL ELECTION CALENDAR
The following is a list of important dates for the 2023 provincial general election.

Sept. 5
Writs issued
The election is called and the campaign period
begins. [The Elections Act s. 49(1)]
Nominations open
Prospective candidates can submit nomination
papers to the returning office. [The Elections Act
s.55(1)(1.)]
Preliminary voters list
distributed
The preliminary voters list is distributed within 48
hours to registered parties for the electoral divisions
in which they are running a candidate and to
candidates. [The Elections Act s. 74(1)]
Voter information cards
mailed
A voter information card is mailed to every voter on
the voters list, detailing where and when they can
vote during advance voting and on election day. [The
Elections Act s. 76.1(1)]
Revision
Voters can register or update their information at
electionsmb.ca, by calling Elections Manitoba, or
visiting the returning office. [The Elections Act s.
77(1)]
Sept. 5 – 14
Note: Revision has been extended using the chief
electoral officer’s power to adapt [The Elections Act s.
28(1)]
Sept. 11
Endorsement of
candidates
Before the close of nominations, registered political
parties must provide the chief electoral officer with
the names of prospective candidates it has endorsed.

Close of nominations
Completed nomination papers must be submitted to
the returning office before 1:00 p.m. [The Elections
Act s. 56(1)(b)]
Sept. 14
Revised voter information
cards mailed
A voter information card is mailed to voters who
registered or updated their information during the
revision period. [The Elections Act s. 88(3)]
Sept. 23 – 30
Advance voting
Voters may vote at any advance poll in the province.
[The Elections Act s. 129(1)]
Wherever possible, advance polling places are open
from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm, Monday to Saturday and
noon to 6:00 p.m. Sunday. [The Elections Act s.
125(7)]
Sept. 30
Deadline for Absentee
Voting Application
Voters who will be away during advance voting and
on election day can apply to be an absentee voter.
[The Elections Act s. 143(1)]
Applications for absentee voting must be received by
the Saturday before election day [The Elections Act s.
143(4)]
Sept. 30
Deadline for homebound
voting application
A person unable to go in person to a polling place and
their caregivers can apply to vote from home. [The
Elections Act s. 151(1)]
Applications for homebound voting must be received
by no later than the day before election day [The
Elections Act s. 151(2)]
Deadline for personal
security voting application
A person with personal security concerns may
request to have their name obscured from the voters
list. [The Elections Act s. 63.6(1)]
Applications for personal security voting must be
received by no later than the day before election day

Oct. 3
Election day
Polling places are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Oct. 4
Final tally begins
The returning officer completes a final tally of votes,
verifying the totals of all votes received. [The
Elections Act s. 160(1)].
Oct. 13
Declaration of candidate
The candidate with the most votes is declared
elected. [The Elections Act 162(1)(2)]
Oct. 19
Application deadline for
judicial recount
An application for a recount must be made within six
days after a candidate is declared elected. [The
Elections Act 165(4)]
Oct. 20
Return of the writ
On the seventh day after a candidate is declared
elected, the writ is returned to the chief electoral
officer, certifying which candidate has been elected.
[The Elections Act 171(1)].
In the event of a judicial recount, the writ will be
returned after the recount has been completed. [The
Elections Act 171(2)]
