Howdy!
Today, I had the honor of speaking at a welcoming ceremony for “The Wall That Heals,” a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C.
I also was honored to introduce Ret. Army Medic Clarence Sasser, an Aggie who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor in 1968 in the Mekong Delta. Amazingly, Sasser survived 15 hours of fighting in an open rice patty, tending to the injured by dragging himself through the mud after his own wounds left this legs immobilized.
The traveling wall honors the Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War, and it bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice there.
Outside of the three military academies, no university in America had more former students lose their lives in Vietnam. About 4,000 Aggies served in Vietnam, and 186 Aggies died in service during the war.
Our nation is blessed by the sacrifices of all of its veterans.
The Texas A&M System is proud to sponsor The Wall that Heals. I encourage everyone who can to visit the memorial, which is open 24-hours a day through 2 p.m. Sunday in Veterans Park in College Station.
