(AGENPARL) – STANFORD (CA) gio 20 aprile 2023
This obituary was provided by a family member.
Born October 3, 1928, Richard De Luce was raised in Los Angeles and attended UCLA, where he majored in Political Science and graduated with honors and made Phi Beta Kappa. He enrolled at Stanford University Law School in 1951. After one academic year, he was called up for military service in the Army during the Korean War. Having completed his ROTC training, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant and eventually shipped off to Korea, where he served with the 392nd Quartermaster Graves Registration Company in Sangju and Taejon. After completing his 20-month stint in the military, he returned to Stanford Law School, where he made the Stanford Law Review. He graduated in June 1955 and was selected to serve as a clerk for the California Supreme Court.
While at law school, Richard met the love of his life on a blind date, Joanne Strang, an undergraduate who was earning her teaching degree at Stanford. They were married in Downey, California on Sept. 10, 1955.
After completing his clerkship, Richard was hired by the law firm Lawler, Felix and Hall in Los Angeles. The couple eventually settled in Palos Verdes Estates in 1961, and raised three children, David, Amy and Dan.
Upbeat, optimistic, conscientious and intellectually curious, Richard was devoted to his wife and children.
From a family of modest means and shaped by the Depression, Richard worked hard and enjoyed success as Los Angeles boomed in the years after World War II. In his lifetime, he saw the city grow exponentially, and as a corporate lawyer, he had a front row seat. At his law firm, Richard rose to be a senior partner, and his clients included General Motors, Pacific Telephone and Standard Oil of California.
His firm was eventually acquired by a larger firm based in Cleveland, Arter and Hadden. Younger associates often sought out Richard’s advice. He was always grateful for the legal education he had received at Stanford. For his efforts raising money for Stanford Law School, he received the Gold Spike Award. In 1985, he was inducted into the American College Trial Lawyers Association.
