Manitoba Government Opens Nominations for
King’s Counsel Appointments
The Manitoba government is opening the call for applications for King’s counsel, a prestigious designation for lawyers awarded in recognition of exceptional contributions to the practise of law until May 15, Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced today.
“Our government is proud to have reinstated the King’s counsel designation process in 2018 to officially recognize the outstanding contributions of Manitoba lawyers to their profession and our province,” said Goertzen. “We encourage applications to honour lawyers who exemplify the best qualities of their profession in serving such a pivotal role in our society.”
King’s Counsel is an honorary title given to a lawyer by the lieutenant-governor in council, based on recommendations made by the justice minister following consultation with an advisory council. Practising and retired lawyers are eligible to self-nominate or may be nominated by others. To be eligible, lawyers must have demonstrated outstanding practice, shown integrity and leadership, contributed to excellence in the profession and been in practice for at least 10 years.
“We are inviting applications from qualified lawyers across the province whose professional records of achievement deserve consideration for the King’s counsel designation,” said Goertzen. “Nominated lawyers embody the best qualities of the legal profession.”
Applications for King’s counsel appointments are valid for three years. Previous applicants need not reapply, unless providing new or updated information.
