City of Toronto opens applications for 2023 Summerlicious Program
The City of Toronto has opened applications for restaurants to participate in the popular Summerlicious program, which returns July 7 to 23. Applications will be accepted from March 1 until March 22 at 11:59 p.m.
Summerlicious 2023 is designed to make it easy and affordable for restaurants to participate and will encourage more Toronto residents to dine out and celebrate Toronto’s diverse culinary scene.
To continue to support the local restaurant industry, the City is offering a reduced fee of $550 plus HST for participation in Summerlicious 2023, less than half of the pre-pandemic fee of $1,300 plus HST. Based on industry feedback, the City has also simplified its online application process, and participating restaurants will continue to have greater flexibility to set menus and price points.
This year’s Summerlicious program will continue to support the recovery and revival of Toronto’s restaurant scene. The program will help the local industry generate much-needed revenue, drive business to local restaurants and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the industry’s workforce.
Restaurants interested in participating in Summerlicious 2023 should review the criteria and application process before submitting their online application. Confirmation of participation in Summerlicious 2023 will be communicated directly to restaurants by late April. The Winterlicious and Summerlicious programs, created by the City of Toronto, began in 2003 as a way to boost Toronto’s restaurant industry during typically slow periods of business. In the years since the program’s inception, participating restaurants have served more than 8 million meals, generating more than $353 million in economic activity for the local restaurant industry.

DOMANI LA CERIMONIA DI INTITOLAZIONE DI UNA TRAVERSA DI VIA AMENDOLA A GINO STRADADomani, giovedì 2 marzo, alle ore 11, si terrà la cerimonia di intitolazione della traversa al civico 184 di via Amendola a Gino Strada, fondatore dell’associazione umanitaria Emergency Gino Strada, che ha trascorso la sua vita sempre dalla parte delle popolazioni e delle persone più fragili, operando con professionalità, coraggio e umanità nelle zone di guerra e nelle aree più povere del mondo. A rappresentare l’amministrazione comunale il vicesindaco e assessore alla Toponomastica Eugenio Di Sciascio e il presidente del Municipio II Gianlucio Smaldone.BIOGRAFIAGino Strada nasce a Sesto San Giovanni (MI) il 21 aprile 1948. Si laurea in Medicina e Chirurgia presso l’Università statale di Milano e si specializza in Chirurgia d’urgenza. Per completare la sua formazione, negli anni ‘80 vive per quattro anni negli Stati Uniti, dove si occupa di chirurgia dei trapianti di cuore e cuore-polmone presso le Università di Stanford e di Pittsburgh. Si sposta poi in Inghilterra e in Sud Africa, dove svolge periodi di formazione presso l’ospedale di Harefield e il Groote Schuur Hospital di Città del Capo. Nel 1988 decide di dedicarsi alla chirurgia di urgenza e all’assistenza dei feriti di guerra, e negli anni successivi, fino al 1994, lavora con la Croce Rossa Internazionale in Pakistan, Etiopia, Tailandia, Afghanistan, Perù, Gibuti, Somalia e Bosnia. Nel 1994, forte dell’esperienza maturata, assieme alla moglie Teresa Sarti e ad alcuni colleghi e amici fonda Emergency, associazione indipendente e neutrale nata per portare cure medico-chirurgiche gratuite e di elevata qualità alle vittime delle guerre, delle mine antiuomo e della povertà in generale.I primi progetti di Emergency, che vedono Gino Strada in prima linea, si svolgono in Ruanda, durante il genocidio, e poi in Cambogia, Paese in cui resta per alcuni anni. Nel 1998 parte per l’Afghanistan: raggiunge via terra il nord del Paese dove, l’anno dopo, Emergency inaugura il primo progetto nel Paese, un centro chirurgico per vittime di guerra ad Anabah, nella Valle del Panshir. Gino Strada rimane in Afghanistan per circa 7 anni, operando migliaia di vittime di guerra e di mine antiuomo e contribuendo all’avvio di altri progetti umanitari. Oggi Emergency è presente in Afghanistan con 3 ospedali, un centro di maternità e una rete di 44 posti di primo soccorso. Dal 2005 inizia a lavorare per l’apertura del centro Salam di cardiochirurgia in Sudan, il primo centro di cardiochirurgia totalmente gratuito in Africa. Nel 2014 si reca in Sierra Leone, dove Emergency è presente dal 2001, per fronteggiare l’emergenza ebola.Emergency in questi anni ha curato oltre 11 milioni di persone ed è presente in 18 Paesi, dove è diventata l’unica speranza di vita per milioni di persone.Gino Strada è morto improvvisamente il 13 agosto 2021 all’età di 73 anni.
