By law, the U.S. government only uses the term, “Washington’s Birthday.”
Members of Congress in the late 1960s lobbied to change “Washington’s Birthday” to “Presidents’ Day” to honor Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, who were both born in February. In the end, Congress decided not to change the name.
However, many calendars, businesses, and state and local governments call it “Presidents’ Day.” And many people consider it not a day to honor Washington or Lincoln, but a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents.
