Manitoba Government Applauds
Team Manitoba Headed to Canada Games
The Manitoba government is excited to cheer on the athletes, coaches, and officials that make up Team Manitoba as they head to the Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Obby Khan announced today.
“Our government is proud of you and is excited to watch you represent your province in events that you have dedicated so much time and energy towards,” said Khan. “As a former professional athlete, I know how much time and sacrifice it takes to achieve this goal. The benefits of this experience will reach well beyond the court, field or rink and we are all rooting for you in Manitoba.”
The Canada Games are the largest multi-sport event in the country and will bring together over 3,600 athletes, managers and coaches across 20 different sports from Feb. 18 to March 5 in P.E.I. Team Manitoba is sending a contingent of 207 athletes, 68 coaches, managers, and technical support staff, and 22 mission staff.
The majority of the events will take place in the cities of Charlottetown and Summerside, and communities of Abrams Village, North Rustico, Three Rivers, and Tyne Valley. Alpine skiing will take place near Fredericton, N.B., and long-track speed skating in Halifax, N.S.
The minister will be on hand for the Team Manitoba pep rally this evening in Charlottetown and will represent the Manitoba government at tomorrow’s opening ceremonies.
“I know how important sport was in my own development and I’m so excited for the opportunity that lies ahead for the members of Team Manitoba to compete on the national level,” said Khan. “These games will also show Manitobans back home what some of the young, up and coming future leaders in our province will look like.”
