50 Years of the Library
That’s right. This year we’ll be turning 50 years old. The Library came to be in 1973 and we can’t help but marvel at how our collections have grown in that time. Read on to discover the creative ways in which you use them, a new online hub for exploring the collection and our acquisition of never-before-seen Brontë items.
Saved for the nation
Last year the Blavatnik Honresfield Library, one of the most significant literary collections in the UK’s history, was purchased for the nation following a successful campaign by led the Friends of the National Libraries. It hasn’t been accessible for 80 years and only by select scholars before that.

This collection was distributed to cultural institutions across the UK. We’ve been entrusted with 102 printed books and four manuscripts, including some astonishing works by the Brontës.
