The Library of Congress is accepting applications for a Sales Counter Attendant until November 4, 2022.
This position is located in the Retail Shop Unit of the Consumer Products & Services Section, Office of Business Enterprises. The incumbent greets and offers assistance to customers, and provides knowledgeable information to customers selecting merchandise. Assists in all areas of Retail Shop, operates Point of Sale System, demonstrates accurate cash handling and solicits donations for the Library’s free programs. Maintains and inventories stock. Performs appropriate upkeep and merchandising in assigned areas. Observes all visitors to maintain security precautions. Adheres to all relevant controls and standards to mitigate risk in cash and inventory handling.
Responsibilities include:
Provides Customer Service – Provides friendly, courteous service and assists customers in the selection of merchandise. Assists all Retail Shop customers in person and by phone in a timely and professional manner, using established procedures. Receives customer inquiries and complaints, providing assistance in arriving at solutions according to established Retail Shop policies and procedures.
Accountability for Point of Sale System – Performs cash register transactions quickly and accurately in accord with established cash control procedures and customer service guidelines. Operates Point of Sale System (cash register) and is responsible for the assigned change fund, performing opening and closing shift functions. In carrying out assigned duties in support of cash processing activities, performs various tasks while processing different forms of payment, such as cash and credit card transactions with completeness and accuracy. Documents and processes refunds and exchanges.
Knowledge and abilities expected:
– Possesses at least 1 year of retail experience.
– Ability to provide customer service and sell merchandise.
– Skills in operating and automated Point of Sale Systems (cash register and related equipment).
– Ability to perform inventory tasks and maintain accurate records.
– Ability to perform stock maintenance and assist in stock preparation.
Duration: 16 to 40 hours per week, not to exceed 120 days. Work schedule includes Saturdays, holidays and occasional evenings.
