WASHINGTON—Acting Comptroller of the Currency Michael J. Hsu today kicked off the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s (OCC) fourth annual High School Scholar Internship Program (HSSIP) for students from Washington, D.C., high schools.
The OCC partners with the District of Columbia’s Department of Employment Services, through the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, to recruit rising seniors for internships at the agency to increase students’ awareness of federal government agency operations, financial regulation, and the banking industry. This year, the OCC is hosting 35 new and returning high school students from 11 Washington, D.C., high schools.
“Banking and bank regulation is about serving communities. The HSSIP is a way for the OCC to support and directly serve the local D.C. community, by providing diverse and inclusive workforce development opportunities for high schoolers,” said Acting Comptroller Hsu. “I am proud that the HSSIP will again this year provide practical knowledge, tools, and hands-on experience to talented youth as they begin their professional development and explore opportunities in our agency, throughout the federal government, and across the banking sector.”
During the six-week virtual program, students will gain experience in various departments at the OCC and participate in a training team environment that relates components of a bank examination to personal financial decisions. The students will also gain meaningful life skills in financial literacy, legal concepts and critical thinking, diversity and inclusion training, public speaking, and resumé writing. Each participant will earn $20 per hour and receive a laptop and professional attire.
Other federal agencies also hosting HSSIP students this year include the Federal Housing Finance Agency, National Credit Union Administration, and Securities and Exchange Commission.
