** Ireland on Stage and Screen
————————————————————
** 24 September – 29 October
————————————————————
Our lifelong learning instructor Dr. Caroline Elbay presents Ireland on Stage and Screen, a six-week course investigates and challenges iconic representations of modern Ireland on both stage and screen.
As a nation and a people oft represented as permanently oscillating between the poles of ‘Paddy Sad/Paddy Mad’ (Lady Morgan) in both musical and theatrical representation, this course invites participants to engage, experience, analyse, and discuss the multifaceted themes and issues (including, but not limited to, identity, language, war/conflict, the revolutionary period, sexuality, religion, the supernatural, friendship, family, music, and marginalisation) addressed by authors, directors, playwrights and screenwriters ranging from Brian Friel, Sean O’Casey, John B. Keane, and Marina Carr.
In addition to a wide variety of theatre masterworks, the course will also include and consider representations of Ireland and the Irish contained in Martin McDonagh’s award-winning film The Banshees of Inisherin, together with Enda Walsh’s masterful adaptation of Claire Keegan’s novel Small Things Like These. Guest speaker(s) from the world of Irish film/theatre will provide practical insights into the art and craft of drama and film.

** A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
————————————————————
** 5 November – 10 December
————————————————————
Dr. Josh Q. Newman will lead a six-week course on James Joyce’s groundbreaking first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
Published in 1916, A Portrait covers many areas: a coming-of-age story (bildungsroman), a snapshot of Ireland at the turn of the 20th century, an examination of religious, historical, and national forces on the individual, a penetrating insight into the human psyche, a foundational work of Modernism, a fictional treatise on aesthetics and youth — among others. It is at once personal and universal, touching and shocking, beautiful and revolting.
Via Joyce’s alterego, Stephen Dedalus, readers are taken on a journey that shows the potential, as well as the limits, of human growth and artistic expression. Joyce’s innovations in prose writing changed the literary conventions of his time and would serve as a springboard for his next novel Ulysses, one of the most influential and radical works of literature of the Modernist movement with which Joyce is often associated. A Portrait, however, stands on its own right as one of the most important works of literature in the 20th century.
You do not have to be an academic or so familiar with Joyce’s work to enjoy the class!
