40th anniversary of the Schengen area of free movement *
Immediately after opening the session, Parliament’s President Roberta Metsola will mark the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Agreement. Signed on 14 June 1985, the agreement allowed the removal of controls at the EU’s internal borders and freedom of movement for European citizens. One representative per political group will take the floor afterwards.
Illegally detained Ukrainian civilians and prisoners of war*
>From around 19:00, MEPs will discuss with Commissioner Kos and Minister Szłapka for the Polish Council presidency the human cost of Russia’s war on Ukraine. The latest developments in Ukraine, international pressure on Russia to negotiate a peace deal, and Moscow’s relentless drone attacks and bombing of civilians in major Ukrainian cities, are expected to feature prominently in the discussion.
In brief*
Illegal use of spyware. *Starting at around 17:45, MEPs will review with Commission Executive Vice-President Virkkunen and Minister Szłapka for the Polish Council presidency the state of play and follow-up two years after the recommendations by the special parliamentary committee on illegal spyware.
Support for rural areas. *Later in the evening, MEPs will debate with Commission Executive Vice-President Fitto how to improve support for rural areas in the EU through cohesion policy.
