Delegations
International trade/US. *An International Trade Committee delegation is travelling to Washington DC to discuss EU-US political, trade and investment relations. They will be gathering information on how the recent tariffs are being applied, how business is adapting, and how EU-US trade tensions can be eased. The MEPs will talk to representatives of various US administration departments and to lawmakers. They will also have meetings with US business organisations and major EU businesses active in the US, and with academics and representatives of trade unions, consumer organisations and think tanks /(Tuesday to Thursday)/.
Security and defence/Norway.* A Security and Defence Committee delegation will be in Norway assessing continued Russian activities and threats affecting the North Atlantic and the EU’s eastern flank. The MEPs will hold discussions with their Norwegian counterparts on continued cooperation within NATO and Norway’s participation in the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) instrument. This will involve meetings with representatives of the Norwegian government and parliament and local authorities /(Tuesday to Friday)/.
Migration/Canary Islands.* A Civil Liberties Committee delegation will travel to El Hierro, Canary Islands, to learn about the challenges faced by the island in managing increased irregular arrivals of migrants. The delegation will meet with local, regional and national authorities, judicial and law enforcement authorities, and civil society organisations, as well as representatives of EU agencies and international organisations operating on the island. The MEPs will also visit reception centres /(Monday and Tuesday). /
Foreign affairs/Mercosur/Uruguay and Argentina.* A delegation from Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee will be in Uruguay and Argentina to meet with representatives of their governments, parliaments and local authorities and to gain insights into political and cooperation aspects of the Mercosur agreement. MEPs will also discuss regional and multilateral cooperation, and geopolitical issues such as Russia’s war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and China’s expanding influence in Latin America /(Monday to Thursday)/.
Housing crisis/Spain. *MEPs from the Special Committee on the Housing Crisis in the EU are going to Barcelona to gather information on how the city is addressing the housing challenges caused by the increase in short-term rentals. MEPs will meet with local, regional and national governments, economic and social actors and education and research institutions /(Monday to Wednesday)/.
European Youth Charlemagne Prize.* On /Tuesday/, the Parliament and the Foundation of the International Charlemagne Prize will award the 2025 European Charlemagne Youth Prize during a ceremony in Aachen. The Prize is awarded for initiatives by young people aged 16 to 30 involved in projects that strengthen democracy and support active participation in political life.
President’s diary*. On /Saturday and Sunday /(24-25 May)/, /European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will be in Ohio (US), where she will deliver keynote speeches at the Dayton Dialogues and at the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. From /Tuesday to Thursday, /President Metsola will be in Italy. On /Tuesday /she will address the Confindustria Assembly in Bologna . *Later the same day, she will visit the European Food Safety Authority and address the Collegio Europeo in Parma. On /Wednesday, /the President will visit the Piemonte Aerospace Cluster and address an event at the Politecnico in Turin. On /Thursday, /she will take part in a discussion at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
