For research, inspiration and enjoyment
As 2024 draws to a close we want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the support we’ve received throughout this year. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to recover from last year’s cyber-attack. You can find a detailed list of what’s currently available ( https://britishlibraryemails.bl.uk/c/AQiz6A8Q-6dzGOmfuwUg3fuUGkELT7eBxGqZuEQKh8gUq22ap2OuDu-YGgV44O0g1Gua ) on our website, along with our seasonal closures ( https://britishlibraryemails.bl.uk/c/AQiz6A8Q-6dzGOmfuwUg3vuUGuAJ7YmM0YkNYbBquoe5HfbujNBTQsRBUOZABjdVilB9 ).
Thank you also to our supporters and partners. We were overwhelmed by the kind donations to our conservation appeal ( https://britishlibraryemails.bl.uk/c/AQiz6A8Q-6dzGOmfuwUg3_uUGhObhtqdq9yP69nngSuWaOfbkCn2MW3SiuFU0GcEvCRw ), which exceeded our target. Without generous supporters and our incredible partners we wouldn’t be able to open up our collection for everyone. Read on to learn how we did this in 2024 and some of our exciting plans for 2025.
The letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Our collection is constantly growing. Among its many wonders we’re pleased to announce that we’ve recently acquired a series of letters from Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning – one of the most important English writers of the 19th century. We’ve also acquired the archive of John Galsworthy, author of the Forsyte Saga.

Bringing our collection to life
For two magical evenings in October our collection came to life on the façade of the Queens Hotel in Leeds for the city’s spellbinding festival, Light Night Leeds.
We commissioned a vast and enchanting artwork and immersive soundscape to delight festival goers. The BookBinder was created by artists Illuminos using drawings, prints and images from our digital collection. Missed it in Leeds? Watch the full projection online.

Empowering young voices in 2025

Did you see Beyond the Bassline near you?
And last but by no means least, this year, our Beyond the Bassline exhibition was shared simultaneously across our partnership of 32 public libraries, alongside a programme of events. A whopping 798,000 people got involved.
Highlights included an event exploring Huddersfield’s sound system culture and a celebration of music producer Winston Hazel in Sheffield. What a year!
