CUT launches ‘Perspectives on Curriculum as Praxis Implications for Higher Education Pedagogy’ book
The 10th Annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conference (SoTL), hosted by the Central University of Technology, Free State form 3 – 5 October 2024, culminated with the launch of a book titled: Perspectives on Curriculum as Praxis Implications for Higher Education Pedagogy.
Edited by Dr. Xolani Khohliso, Head: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning at CUT and Prof. Emmanuel Mgqwashu, Director: Centre for Higher Education Professional Development at North West University (NWU), the book is not merely an academic book that relates to higher education, but it is also a valuable and insightful contribution to the sector.
Prof. Mgqwashu stated that it needs to be acknowledged that curricula is both new and planned. “We have the government who plans, we have academics who plan. So, curricula, is something that is planned as well as lived in the classroom. Lived by both academics and students. When we were deciding on which abstracts to bring in, we wanted to reflect on curricula not as a statement to which we respond. It is planned, yes, but it is also lived, meaning it is an ever-evolving entity. Secondly, we needed chapters to reflect the extent to which curricula is a form of running by students and by academics. Running in action, people are running a course. Curricula is a course that ends with knowledge, that defines a discipline of an individual where it is meaningful,” said Mgqwashu.
“And lastly, we wanted to acknowledge in this book that in as much as curricula and being involved in curricula is a form of running, individuals who run will generate other paths that have not been anticipated by the one who teaches. So, we acknowledge that even though curricula are planned, it is also lead by students and academics,” he added.
Selected chapters in the book include Chapter 1: Curriculum as praxis in the age of coloniality: Implications for pedagogy; Chapter 2. Multilingualism: An effective learning and teaching strategy to enhance higher education curriculum practice; Chapter 3: Advancing pedagogical transformative voices from the peripheries: The role of critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving in the curriculum; Chapter 5: Rethinking support for university teachers in the context of a decolonising higher education: The role of academic developers; Chapter 8: Female students perspectives on being included in curriculum transformation in higher education and Chapter 9: Research impact doctoral pedagogy.
The book is a contribution that will hopefully lead to further doctoral studies, master’s qualifications, and even bigger projects.
