Insects of Japan
Step into the enchanting wildlife of Japan. This 1851 manuscript contains a collection of vibrant illustrations of animals and insects found in the country including mantises, stick insects, dragonflies, butterflies, moths and beetles.
Recording the wild
The 1970s saw the rise of wildlife sound recording as a hobby. This microphone, with its concave dish, amplified the song or call of the animal being recorded. And it’s portable! At least by 1970s standards…
The song of the last
Kaua?i ???? bird
Habitat destruction and invasive species reduced the thriving Kaua?i ???? population to a single pair. In 1982, the female died during a hurricane, leaving behind her male partner whose solitary song can be heard on tape in the exhibition. The species was declared extinct in 2000.
