Are companies in developed countries legally responsible for the adverse impacts of their activities throughout the production chain located in the developing world? The lecture will explore these issues and examine the theoretical and practical legal devices making importers, retailers, and garment labels legally responsible for labour conditions in developing-world factories and workshops that do their production. Examples will include the International Accord for Bangladesh (right after the worst industrial accident in fashion history, the 2013 Rana Plaza disaster), French Loi de Vigilance, a new proposal for an EU directive on diligence, and California legislation on supply chain transparency and nonemployer responsibility.”
