UNEP at Africa Climate Week and Africa Climate Summit 2023
4 – 8 September 2023
Africa Climate Week (ACW) is an annual event that brings together leaders from governments, businesses, international organizations and civil society to explore ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to the mounting fallout from the climate crisis. This year, ACW 2023 will take place from 4-8 September in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted by the Government of Kenya.
ACW 2023 will be held alongside the Africa Climate Summit (ACS) which will run from 4-6 September, also hosted by the Government of Kenya. During the ACS, African leaders will be called upon to make ambitious pledges and commitments, towards the adoption of a “Pledging and Commitment Framework.”
One of four Regional Climate Weeks held this year, ACW 2023 builds momentum ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in Dubai and the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake, designed to chart the way towards fulfilling the Paris Agreement’s goals and provide region-focused contributions to inform the Global Stocktake. 
ACW 2023 will be organized into four systems-based tracks, each focusing on specific themes:
* Energy systems and industry
* Cities, urban and rural settlements, infrastructure and transport
* Land, ocean, food and water
* Societies, health, livelihoods, and economies
In the context of ACW/ACS, UNEP has released two publications which will inform the thematic tracks:
Tuesday 30 August – UNEP & International Organization for Migration (IOM) – Integrating Displaced Populations into National Climate Change Policy and Planning – Policy Brief
There are now more than 100 million people overall displaced, around 75% of whom are hosted by low or middle-income countries and living in protracted circumstances. Host countries are struggling to meet the needs of internally displaced people and refugees, despite the efforts and support of UN agencies and humanitarian actors.
This Policy Brief, produced under the auspices of UNEP NDC Action project – which supports 10 countries, including Bangladesh, Colombia, Jordan and Uganda – highlights the needs and opportunities to strengthen the strategic and operational bridges between the humanitarian, development, climate change and environment fields.
Friday 1 September – UNEP & UNICEF – Time to Act: African Children in The Climate Change Spotlight
Children in Africa are among the most at risk of the impacts of climate change but are woefully neglected by the key climate financing flows required to help them adapt, survive and respond to the climate crisis.
According to the report, Time to Act: African children in the climate change spotlight, children in 48 out of 49 African countries assessed, are categorized as at high or extremely high risk of the impacts of climate change. The analysis assesses countries based on children’s exposure to climate and environmental shocks, such as cyclones and heatwaves, as well as their vulnerability to those shocks, based on their access to essential services.
Representatives from UNEP will also be organizing/taking part in several events during Africa Climate Week, outlined below. All timings are reflected in East African Time.
