In August of 2022, the Department of Education (ED) announced changes to help student loan borrowers transition back to regular payments. Know what the student debt relief plan includes and how it will impact you.
Extending the student loan repayment pause. ED extended the pause through December 31, 2022. You don’t need to take action as this pause is automatic.
Providing debt cancellation for some loan holders. Pell Grant recipients with ED loans will receive up to $20,000 in debt cancellation. Non-Pell Grant recipients will receive up to $10,000 in debt cancellation. You are eligible if your individual income is less than $125,000 or your household income is less than $250,000 a year.
Changing income-driven repayment (IDR) plans. Details include forgiving loan balances after 10 years of payments and covering unpaid monthly interest.
