EU asylum rules update: press conference with lead MEPs Tuesday at 14.00 [2]
Following plenary votes, Parliament’s rapporteurs will brief journalists on the new list of safe countries of origin and on the application of the safe third countries regulation.
When: *Tuesday 10 February 2026, 14.00 CET.
Where: *European Parliament in Strasbourg, Daphne Caruana Galizia press conference room (WEISS N -1/201).
Who: *Parliament’s rapporteurs Lena Düpont [3] (EPP, DE) and Alessandro Ciriani [4] (ECR, IT).
Interpretation will be available into and from Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Polish.
The press conference will also be webstreamed live on the Parliament’s Multimedia Centre [5] .
How:* Accredited media representatives can attend the press conference in person. Journalists may also join the press conference and ask questions remotely via the Interactio platform [6] . When connecting, enter your name and the media organisation you are representing in the first name/last name fields. For better sound quality, use headphones and a microphone. Background*
In December 2025 Parliament and Council negotiators reached a political agreement to update the 2024 Asylum Law rules regarding the application of the “safe third countries” concept [7] and establishing an EU list of safe countries of origin [8] . These new provisions will give EU countries additional possibilities to reject asylum requests from applicants coming from countries considered safe or when they could have sought protection in a safe third country outside the EU.
The Civil Liberties Committee endorsed the two provisional deals on 27 January 2026 [9] . Plenary votes will take place on Tuesday 10 February from 12.30, following a brief debate among MEPs.
Formal adoption by the Council will follow.
