Incident at Boet Troskie Hall – Central University of Technology
The Central University of Technology (CUT) notes with deep concern an incident involving a 15-year-old learner who sustained head injuries after being struck by a loose brick that fell from the roof area of Boet Troskie Hall following heavy rainfall in Bloemfontein on 12 December 2025.
At the time, the learner was participating in the High Schools Debate Championship, organised by the South African School Debate Board (SASDB), which was hosted at the university. Emergency services were immediately notified, and the learner was promptly transported to a medical facility for assessment and treatment.
CUT is relieved to confirm that the learner sustained minor injuries, has received the necessary medical care, and is currently in a stable condition. The university management extends its heartfelt well-wishes to the learner and his family and wishes him a speedy and full recovery.
The university has initiated an internal investigation to establish the cause of the incident. In the interim, the affected areas have been secured, and precautionary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of learners, visitors, and staff. The SASDB Medical Team is also on campus to provide counselling and emotional support to learners and staff.
CUT remains firmly committed to maintaining a safe environment across all its campuses and will continue to cooperate with relevant stakeholders on this matter.
Further communication will be issued as additional information becomes available.
