** Dubeloving
Wednesday, 22nd October at 6.30pm
————————————————————
The Intercultural Language Service (ILS) (https://www.ilsschool.org?mc_cid=0a16a0d5f5&mc_eid=UNIQID) will launch its latest book of plurilingual poetry in the Dubylon series, Dubeloving, on Wednesday, 22nd October at 6.30pm.
Curated by the poets Fiona Bolger and Rafael Mendez, Dubeloving: From the People of Dubylon is an anthology of plurilingual writing from the 2025 Dubeloving workshops involving people of broadly diverse communities who have been exploring love as tenderness, a struggle for justice, even losing hope sometimes.
Kumonalong and join us for a wonderful reading in and between many languages of love.
Doors open at 6pm. The event is free but booking is essential.
** Cometh the Hour, Cometh the Comet
Saturday, 1st November at 6.30pm
————————————————————
Prepare for a dazzling evening where literature meets the cosmos. On All Hallows’ Day (1st November) at 6.30pm, journalist and Joyce scholar Senan Molony unveils a striking new celestial discovery hidden within James Joyce’s Ulysses.
What if the blazing trail of Halley’s Comet streaks not only through the heavens, but through the very pages of the 20th century’s greatest novel? Join us as Molony explores how Joyce’s fascination with astronomy, astrology, and cosmic symbolism illuminates the intertwined fates of Leopold Bloom, Molly, and Blazes Boylan — each orbiting their destinies like heavenly bodies in an eternal dance. Timed to coincide with the arrival of a new interstellar visitor to our solar system in late 2025, this lecture invites you to look upward — and inward.
Doors open at 6pm. The event is free but booking is essential.
** A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Course
Starting Wednesday, 5th November at 6pm
————————————————————
Dr. Josh Q. Newman will lead a six-week course on James Joyce’s groundbreaking first novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, starting on Wednesday, 5th November at 6pm Irish Standard Time.
Published in 1916, A Portrait covers many areas: a coming-of-age story (bildungsroman), a snapshot of Ireland at the turn of the 20th century, an examination of religious, historical, and national forces on the individual, a penetrating insight into the human psyche, a foundational work of Modernism, a fictional treatise on aesthetics and youth — among others. It is at once personal and universal, touching and shocking, beautiful and revolting.
This course will go through the novel in detail. We will examine the laboured production of the novel as well as its historical and literary influences and other supplementary material. The course will consist of readings, group discussions, presentations, and guest lectures.
You do not have to be an academic or so familiar with Joyce’s work to enjoy the class!
