* Towards Net Zero: Suncombe’s Expertise Supports Kindeva in Delivering Greener Inhalers to the NHS *
Suncombe, the UK-headquartered specialist in advanced bio-waste decontamination systems, Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) systems and high purity process skids, has successfully completed a landmark project with Kindeva.
The collaboration plays a central role in helping the National Health Service (NHS) progress towards its ambitious Net Zero strategy by supporting the development and production of low Global Warming Potential (GWP) pressurised metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) products.
The NHS has identified inhaler propellants as a notable contributor to its carbon footprint, accounting for around 3% of total emissions. Traditional propellants used in asthma inhalers, while effective in drug delivery, have historically carried a high environmental cost.
By introducing new low GWP alternatives that reduce emissions by more than 90% compared with the currently used HFA-134a propellant, Kindeva’s next generation of inhalers is set to deliver substantial environmental benefits while continuing to provide vital therapies for patients.
As part of this initiative, Kindeva – one of the UK’s largest inhaler manufacturers – has made important investment in its Loughborough facility. This expansion will enable large-scale production of inhalers using the new alternative propellants. Suncombe’s role in the project has been to co-develop and tailor critical processing systems that meet Kindeva’s specific requirements for this pioneering manufacturing capability.
The collaboration draws on Suncombe’s decades of expertise in engineering bespoke solutions for high-purity and biopharma applications, ensuring robust performance and compliance with the demanding standards of the pharmaceutical sector.
Lending its engineering expertise towards the strategic sustainability goals of leading organisations, Suncombe continues to demonstrate how technical excellence and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
Steve Overton, Suncombe’s Operations Director commented “We have worked with the Loughborough site for many years producing equipment for their production lines and were honoured to be asked to be involved in this incredibly important project for Kindeva, for the NHS and ultimately for the sustainability of the world environment.”
Craig Sommerville, Senior Vice President of the MDI business unit at Kindeva, commented, “Establishing Loughborough as Kindeva’s MDI centre of excellence will transform patients’ lives across the world. Our partnership with Suncombe will continue to showcase our expertise as market leaders in the field and allow Kindeva to support the NHS with its transition to next-generation propellants, whilst treating patients with respiratory conditions.”
This partnership demonstrates how UK-based engineering and manufacturing expertise can play a vital role in addressing global challenges, from climate change to sustainable healthcare delivery, setting a benchmark for the industry in both innovation and responsibility.
