CUT excels in the prestigious WorldSkills South Africa local heat competitions
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT), is making significant strides in the global arena of technological innovation, with students and staff excelling in the prestigious WorldSkills South Africa (WSZA) competitions, particularly in the cutting-edge field of Autonomous Mobile Robotics.
Since joining WorldSkills International (WSI) in 1990, South Africa has strategically leveraged the platform to spotlight artisan and technical careers, with a strong focus on youth development. CUT has emerged as a key player in this national effort, showcasing the power of innovation and education in shaping the future.
Ms. Diteboho Mokhohlane, a dedicated Information Technology Lecturer at CUT, has been appointed as a Provincial Expert and Coach for the WSZA Mobile Robotics team. Her commitment is evident in her participation in top-tier training programmes both locally and internationally.
Mr. Fumane Mboweni, WSZA’s Artisan Development Director and Technical delegate said “we have appointed Ms. Diteboho Mokhohlane as a Provincial Expert and Coach for the WSZA Mobile Robotics team because her expertise and leadership are instrumental in shaping our national team. She embodies the kind of forward-thinking mentorship we strive for,” said Mboweni.
From 8 to 11 July 2025, the university hosted the Local Heat Competitions in Bloemfontein, a significant event where IT students demonstrated their world-class talent. Eight out of ten participants advanced to the Provincial Competition, marking a crucial step towards the 2026 WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China.
“We’re not just building robots. We are building futures. Every bolt and every line of code is about creating new pathways for our students,” Mokhohlane emphasised.
The 2024–2026 period marks the final phase of South Africa’s “Decade of the Artisan” campaign, a national initiative aimed at inspiring youth and addressing critical skills shortages in high-demand professions. CUT’s success in the robotics programme is a testament to the power of collaboration, driven by a diverse team of mentors, managers, and organisers dedicated to elevating vocational education and technical excellence.
As the road to Shanghai 2026 unfolds, the university continues to lead, not just as a participant but as a pioneer, shaping the next generation of innovators.
