Unveiling the hidden economic toll of NCDs and mental health

SUBJECT: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will launch a new report – Major Storm on the horizon – that sheds light on the significant macroeconomic impact of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions in South America.
The report, commissioned by PAHO and developed by researchers at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, offers new insights into how these health challenges are not only taking lives but are also driving staggering economic losses across the region – with projections surpassing trillions of US dollars by 2050.
As countries strive for economic recovery and sustainable development, understanding the economic burden of NCDs and mental health is essential for shaping smarter health and fiscal policies.
