(AGENPARL) – Mon 07 July 2025 For the first time in Scandinavia, the International Conference on Neutron
Scattering (ICNS) will be held this week in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Lund,
Sweden.
More than 700 neutron scientists from 36 countries will gather to share the
latest breakthroughs in neutron research – a field that plays a crucial role in
advanced materials science and in tackling some of the most pressing global
challenges.
For the first time in Scandinavia, the International Conference on Neutron
Scattering (ICNS) will be held this week in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Lund,
Sweden.
More than 700 neutron scientists from 36 countries will gather to share the
latest breakthroughs in neutron research – a field that plays a crucial role in
advanced materials science and in tackling some of the most pressing global
challenges.
ICNS is a leading global platform for knowledge exchange among scientists using
neutrons to drive scientific progress. Held only once every four years and
rotating between Europe, the Americas, and Asia, the conference visits Europe
just once every twelve years. Its 2025 location in Scandinavia highlights the
strategic importance of the European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under
construction outside Lund, and its associated Data Management and Software
Centre at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Copenhagen.
This reflects not only scientific momentum but also the growing importance of
strengthening Europe’s global competitiveness in neutron science.
Professor Kim Lefmann, University of Copenhagen, Conference Chair says:
– It is a great honour to host all these delegates and this important
conference in Scandinavia. The shared location between Copenhagen and Lund
underlines the strong Nordic collaboration in this scientific field; a
collaboration that 25 years ago led to our common proposal to host the ESS.
At ICNS 2025, research will be presented on topics such as: Advanced materials
for safe and efficient hydrogen storage, supporting the global energy
transition, innovations in battery components, developments in 3D metal printing
shaping the future of manufacturing, advanced materials for the quantum
technology of the future, the role of neutron scattering in unlocking the
potential of plant-based foods, and much more.
Speakers, other delegates and exhibitors are arriving from around the world.
Countries with the highest attendance include: Germany (160), Sweden (98),
France (86), Denmark (73), Japan (51), China w Hong Kong (50), Switzerland (47),
UK (47), USA (46). Other participating countries include: Australia, Austria,
Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland,
Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New
Zealand, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain
and Taiwan.
From Sunday evening, 6 July, to Wednesday, 9 July, ICNS will take place at the
Bella Center in Copenhagen, featuring seminars, keynote lectures, poster
sessions, and networking meetings. On Thursday, 10 July, the conference
continues in – Lund with sessions at The Loop and a site visit to the ESS
facility.
Helmut Schober, Director General ESS, looks forward to welcoming all attendees
on the final day of the conference:
– It is our great pleasure and privilege to highlight, through the visit
to ESS, the remarkable progress we have made at ESS in building Europe’s future
neutron flagship facility. I am hopeful that many of the visitors will
eventually be welcomed as users to perform exciting experiments when the
scientific programme launches in 2027.

Media Invitation
Science and news media professionals are invited to apply for media
accreditation for ICNS 2025.
Accredited journalists may attend conference sessions, lectures, and seminars.
The site visit to The Loop and the ESS Facility in Lund is included on Thursday,
10 July.
