City of Toronto introduces CampTO Nutrition Program providing grocery cost relief to Toronto families
The City of Toronto is launching a CampTO Nutrition Program as part of its commitment to food security and fighting the rising cost of living. This initiative will offer up to 56,000 children at 89 City camp locations a nutritious morning snack on the days they are enrolled. Nutrition program locations include Free Centres, recreation facilities in equity-deserving neighbourhoods and areas with a high proportion of households with low income, where fees are waived to increase access to programs.
The initiative is part of the City’s CampTO program, launched in 2020, that offers a variety of camp experiences for youth ages four to 16 at multiple locations across the city. From early July to late August, these youth can get active, learn new skills, build friendships and create positive memories.
The dedicated $1.016 million budget for this program covers the cost of a daily morning snack as well as the staffing costs to deliver it. The City offers more than 90,000 CampTO spaces at more than 180 locations.
The program is another way the City is advancing affordability for families, while enhancing food security, fostering long-term healthy eating habits and strengthening local economies. Last week, Toronto City Council adopted A Vision and Strategy for a Universal School Food Program in Toronto – a plan to expand meal programs to every public school in the city, saving families with two kids up to $880 a year. “So many in our city are struggling with rising costs, especially on grocery bills. The CampTO nutrition program is a strategic public investment. In a time of economic uncertainty, it extends access to nutritious food for families outside of the school year. We’re fighting rising costs and investing in stronger communities.”
