City of Sacramento Launches Vision Zero Action Plan Update Initiative
The City of Sacramento is officially kicking off its update to the Vision Zero Action Plan (VZAP), showing a renewed commitment to eliminating transportation-related deaths and serious injuries.
Originally adopted in 2018, the Vision Zero Action Plan is Sacramento’s roadmap to reduce severe and fatal traffic crashes through data-informed policies, programs, plans and infrastructure investments supported by equity-centered community engagement.
The update process will unfold over the coming months, engaging community members, advocates, and technical experts to shape the next iteration of the Plan. The update is expected to be completed in Spring 2026.
To support the update, the City has released a Vision Zero Crash Data Dashboard that compiles and visualizes crash data from 2013 to 2023. This data will be central to identifying safety corridors, prioritizing safety improvements, and tracking progress throughout the planning process.
Community participation will be essential in shaping the new Vision Zero Action Plan. The City is particularly interested in listening to communities most affected by traffic violence as shown through data. These communities are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), immigrant, and low-income communities.
Later this year we’ll have engagement opportunities including: Public meetings and pop-up events in neighborhoods across the city (stay tuned!)Online surveys and comment tools
Collaboration with community-based organizations and the Vision Zero Taskforce

Bikeway Separation Treatments Project
The City of Sacramento is exploring options for vertical separation of the separated bikeway network. Currently, the City primarily uses K-71 posts to provide vertical separation for people bicycling from vehicle lanes. The Bikeway Separation Treatment Project is seeking to develop a new standard and decision-making process to identify separation treatments that will offer increased comfort and safety for active modes.
As part of this project, we are developing a guiding document of bikeway separation treatments to inform the implementation of separated bikeways citywide.
The recommended treatments are as follows:
In addition to standardizing the application of linear bikeway separation treatments, we developed location-specific treatments. The locations considered include:
Accessible Vehicle Parking Spaces
DrivewaysProtected Intersections
This project also includes an update to standards and guidance pertaining to entryway treatments at shared-use paths citywide. The City of Sacramento has an extensive shared use path network with a variety of entry treatments and is seeking best practices for shared use path entry treatments with the goal to standardize the design approach for new and upgraded shared-use path entry points across the City.
Staff will present recommendations to the Active Transportation Commission on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Introducing the New Current Projects Dashboard
The City of Sacramento Department of Public Works is excited to introduce the new Current Projects Dashboard, which displays information about current transportation projects throughout the city. The Public Works team has been hard at work to improve mobility and safety through innovative transportation efforts. This dashboard provides an overview of all of the current, on-going transportation projects and specific information related to each of them.
With this tool, Sacramento communities can stay up to date on the numerous local transportation projects throughout the city. The Current Projects Dashboard provides tools to filter based on Council District or Project Phase. The dashboard allows users to learn more about each project by clicking on the project to open its drop box.
If you are interested in exploring the new Current Projects Dashboard, visit the City’s Current Transportation Efforts, Plans, and Programs webpage.
