(AGENPARL) – Tue 03 June 2025 FAO to present the most detailed global assessment of marine fish stocks to date at UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France
Press briefing + Launch Event | 11 June at 13:00 (CEST)
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will launch the 2025 edition of its Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources at the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC), taking place in Nice, France, from 9 to 13 June 2025.
The report will be officially launched during a high-level event on 11 June at 14:00 (CEST), following a press conference at 13:00 (CEST) at the UNOC Media Centre. Both events will be webcast via UN Web TV.
FAO’s Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources is the most detailed assessment of global marine fisheries to date. Developed with contributions from more than 650 experts across 92 countries, the 2025 edition covers over 2,500 marine fish stocks in all FAO fishing areas. The report highlights both positive trends and major sustainability concerns, offering a critical snapshot of ocean health and fisheries governance.
The official launch will feature opening remarks by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu.
The event will include a technical presentation from Manuel Barange, FAO Assistant Director-General and Director of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division. A panel discussion with diverse partners will explore the policy implications and pathways for action.
FAO experts will be available for interviews. Journalists are encouraged to express their interest in advance to discuss key findings from the report, the state of global fisheries, and FAO’s broader work related to the ocean economy.
About the Conference
Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, the 2025 UN Ocean Conference will convene world leaders, scientists, youth and civil society under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”. It will serve as a key milestone in supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) and galvanizing commitments to conserve and sustainably use marine biodiversity and resources.
FAO’s Contribution to the Conference
In addition to the report launch, FAO will take part in several Ocean Action Panels, bringing its technical expertise to discussions on the sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems, inclusive fisheries governance, and the role of aquatic foods in poverty eradication and food security.
Youth-led Action for Ocean Sustainability: FAO at 80
To mark its 80th anniversary, FAO will host a youth-led event on 9 June at 10:00 (CEST), titled “From legacy to leadership: Youth-led action for ocean sustainability” on board the vessel Statsraad Lehmkuhl, docked in the port of Nice. Organized in collaboration with Norway and the Sustainable Ocean Alliance – a global network that empowers young leaders and ocean innovators to develop solutions for ocean sustainability, the event will bring together young professionals, researchers and community leaders to reflect on key solutions to drive sustainability in fisheries and aquaculture.
Participants will co-develop a youth-led outcome statement with actionable proposals to shape the future of aquatic food systems. The statement will be published on the FAO World Food Forum portal and inform the work of FAO’s Youth Constituency for Fisheries and Aquaculture.
