Russian democratic opposition.* Yulia Navalnaya, Vladimir Kara-Murza, Ilya Yashin and other prominent members of Russia’s democratic opposition are coming to discuss EU support for pro-democratic forces in Russia in the new geopolitical context, in a debate with the Foreign Affairs Committee, the Human Rights Subcommittee and the EP-Russia delegation /(Thursday)/.
EU – Ukraine road transport*. The Transport and Tourism Committee will vote to update the EU-Ukraine road transport agreement and prolong it until the end of 2025. Concluded in June 2022, the deal is the EU’s response to the disruptions to Ukraine’s transport sector caused by the Russian invasion. It facilitates cross-border transport of vital goods such as fuel and humanitarian aid into Ukraine while enabling Ukrainian exports to reach the EU and beyond /(Tuesday)/.
EU enlargement.* MEPs on the Foreign Affairs Committee will assess current affairs and progress with reforms in several candidate countries as they advance towards EU membership. In separate votes, MEPs will evaluate the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, North Macedonia and Georgia /(Wednesday)/.
Welfare of dogs and cats.* The EU’s first-ever rules on dog and cat welfare will be up for a vote in the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. The proposed bill takes aim at puppy mills and the illegal trade in pets, and will set EU standards for the breeding, housing and handling of dogs and cats in breeding establishments, pet shops and shelters /(Tuesday)/.
EU values/Slovakia*. A Civil Liberties Committee delegation will be in Bratislava to assess developments in Slovakia in the area of democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights, following two recent meetings on this topic in Parliament’s Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group. The MEPs will meet representatives of the government, the National Assembly, the judiciary and other relevant authorities. Meetings are also scheduled with non-governmental organisations advocating for media freedom, transparency, human rights and democracy /(Monday and Tuesday)/.
Eurolat.* EU and Latin American parliamentarians will gather in Lima (Peru) for the 16th session of the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (Eurolat). The first EuroLat plenary session since the June 2024 European elections will focus on reinforcing bilateral cooperation and promoting trade liberalisation, in a geopolitical context of instability and threats to rules-based multilateralism /(Sunday 1 to Tuesday 3 June). /
Danish Presidency of the EU Council.* The Conference of Presidents (Parliament’s President and the political group leaders) will travel to Copenhagen to meet with representatives of the Danish government and parliament to prepare for Denmark’s six-month presidency of the EU Council, which starts on 1 July 2025. President Metsola and PM Frederiksen will speak to the press at 11:25 /(Tuesday). /
President’s diary*. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will meet Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, in Copenhagen on Tuesday, after which they will host a joint press point. President Metsola will also have an audience with His Majesty King Frederik X of Denmark and Her Majesty Queen Mary Elizabeth of Denmark. Still on Tuesday in Copenhagen, the President will meet Denmark’s Minister of European Affairs, Marie Bjerre. On Wednesday, in Brussels, President Metsola will receive the Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean, and a delegation from the US Chamber of Commerce. On Thursday, the EP President will meet Yulia Navalnaya.
