Acute hunger reaches a record high while global aid is faltering
The report will go live on 16 May (Friday) at 12:00 CEST on the GNAFC website and FSIN website : FAO experts are available for interviews upon request
On 16 May 2025, the Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) – a multi-stakeholder initiativeto prevent, prepare for, and respond to food crises– will release the 2025 edition of its flagship publication: The Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC). The production of the report is coordinated by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN) for the Network.
GRFC 2025 highlights that the number of people facing acute food insecurity surged for the sixth consecutive year in 2024 amid significant reductions in lifesaving humanitarian funding.
The report prominently features crises requiring immediate action, such as Gaza and Sudan, as well as the unprecedented deterioration in terms of the amount of people having been pushed into Catastrophe conditions (IPC/CH Phase 5) in 2024.
It also provides a comprehensive analysis of key factors driving food crises globally, including conflict, climate and economic shocks, and displacement. For the first time, the report spotlights ‘nutrition crises’ and ‘nutrition concerns’ in food crises contexts.
Hybrid high-level launch event: 16 May 2025, 14:00-15:30 CEST, Italian Conference Room (S-105), IFAD headquarters, Rome
Also on 16 May, starting at 14:00 CEST, a hybrid high-level event will bring together leaders from the European Union, the United Nations, intergovernmental organizations as well as government officials to present the report’s key findings in the context of global shocks – economic crisis, changing climate, and funding cuts – and discuss models of efficiencies and ‘what has worked’ both in terms of evidence, policy development and response models.
High-level speakers include:
* António Guterres, Secretary-General un the United Nations (video message)
* Hadja Lahbib, European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management (video message)
* QU Dongyu, Director-General, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
