Debate with Presidents Costa and von der Leyen on the challenges facing the EU. *On /Tuesday morning/, Parliament will assess the outcome of the 20 March European Council, with Presidents António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen. The summit focused on the EU’s competitiveness, Ukraine, defence and security, the Middle East, the EU’s next long-term budget, migration, and multilateralism.
EU foreign, defence and security policies for 2025. *On /Tuesday/, MEPs will discuss the EU’s common foreign, defence and security policy objectives for 2025 with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas. They are set to call on the EU to invest more in its defence sector, which also means increasing military and political support for Ukraine. MEPs may also advocate expanding the EU’s presence in the Middle East and doing more to support EU enlargement countries. The vote will take place on /Wednesday,/ followed by a press conference.
Improving the EU’s safety and preparedness.* On /Tuesday/, the Commission will present its internal security strategy, followed by a debate with MEPs, aiming at strenghtening intelligence gathering, preparedness against hybrid threats, and the fight against organised crime. In a second debate, MEPs and the Commission will discuss the “Preparedness Union” strategy for better crisis response coordination, protecting essential services, stockpiling critical materials, and improved civil-military cooperation.
Steel and metals action plan/energy intensive industries.* On /Wednesday morning/, MEPs and the Commission will debate its new action plan for a competitive and decarbonised steel and metals industry in Europe. In a separate debate on /Wednesday/, followed by a vote, they will assess the Commission’s approach to other EU energy intensive industries.
Savings and investments union.* On /Monday/, MEPs and the Commission will discuss recently unveiled savings and investments union initiative which aims to help citizens turn their savings into profitable investments.
Crackdown on democracy in Türkiye.* MEPs will discuss the latest developments in Türkiye, including the arrest of Istanbul’s mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on /Tuesday/.
Situation in Gaza*. In a debate on /Tuesday/ with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, MEPs are expected to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and continuation of the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas.
Russian war crimes in Ukraine*. On /Tuesday morning/, MEPs and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will discuss the need to hold Russia accountable for its war crimes in Ukraine.
Threats to fundamental rights in Hungar*y. On /Wednesday/, Parliament, Council, and Commission will discuss recent legislative changes in Hungary and their impact on fundamental rights.
President’s diary*. On Monday, EP President Roberta Metsola will meet Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and on Tuesday she will meet Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
Last-minute briefing*. On /Monday /at 16.30, Parliament will hold a press briefing on the plenary session, which starts at 17.00. Political group briefings will take place on /Tuesday /morning.
