Harlem Globetrotters to be designated as FAO Global Goodwill Ambassadors
Palazzo dello Sport, Rome, Italy – 9 March 2025, at 18:30 CET
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will designate the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters as FAO Global Goodwill Ambassadors during their show on 9 March 2025 at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome. This special recognition highlights the team’s commitment to raising awareness on global food security, nutrition, and sustainability.
Harlem Globetrotters and FAO’s Mission
For over a year, the Harlem Globetrotters have actively supported FAO’s mission. Their contributions include visits to school feeding projects, participation in World Food Day activities, and engagement with children to promote healthy diets and food security. They have also played a key role in FAO’s outreach efforts at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and visited the neighborhood of Tor Bella Monaca in Rome, to discuss food rights with children.
As FAO Global Goodwill Ambassadors, they will continue to champion key issues such as reducing food waste and promoting sustainable food systems.
Designation Ceremony in Rome
The designation will take place during the Harlem Globetrotters’ performance, with FAO’s Director-General, QU Dongyu joining the team center court for the official announcement. Head coach Saul White JR will accept the designation scroll on behalf of the team.
Journalists are invited to the event, which will take place in front of an audience of over 7,000 spectators. Accredited media will have the opportunity to attend the show itself and the designation ceremony and engage with key FAO representatives and members of the Harlem Globetrotters.
Founded in 1926, the Harlem Globetrotters are a legendary exhibition basketball team known for their entertaining style, athleticism, and social impact. Having played in over 124 countries, they continue to use sport as a vehicle for positive change, aligning with FAO’s mission to create a world free from hunger. Their Emmy-Award-winning NBC primetime programme, Play It Forward, showcases their humanitarian efforts worldwide.
