George Moore: A Neglected Innovator is a special lecture organised by the James Joyce Tower & Museum. It is an introduction to the life and work of the Irish writer George Moore by his biographer, Adrian Frazier. The lecture will be held at DLR LexIcon in Dun Laoghaire.
Along with Shaw, Wilde, and Yeats, George Moore was one of the Irish writers who remade English literature at the end of the nineteenth century. He returned to Dublin in 1901, at Yeats’s request, to help set up the Irish Literary Theatre. During his decade in Dublin he wrote The Untilled Field, the first Irish example of the European short story, and The Lake, hailed as a masterpiece. James Joyce took note – his library in Trieste contained eleven of Moore’s works. Hail and Farewell, Moore’s scandalous memoir of the Irish Revival, was on Ernest Hemingway’s list of essential reading for writers. In theme and image, Moore forged a vision of Ireland that anticipated Joyce and Beckett, and provided an alternative to the romantic idealism of the Celtic revival. And yet today he is little read or studied.
Adrian Frazier is a professor emeritus of the University of Galway, where he directed the MA programmes in Drama and Theatre and Creative Writing. His acclaimed biography George Moore, 1852-1933 was published in 2000 by the Yale University Press. One reviewer wrote “Adrian Frazier has produced a fascinating picture of a man of many contradictions, immense initiative, and energy: one of the most multifaceted writers of his own or any time.” Professor Frazier is a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
